The Office was opened in October 1998 to enable the Government of Montserrat to have a presence in the UK to assist persons who relocated to the UK following the eruption of the Soufriere Hills Volcano in 1995.  Today the office continues to support the Diaspora as well as play its full part in the development of the island.  The terms of reference for Montserrat Government UK office includes:

  • Communicate Government of Montserrat policies and relevant activities to persons in HMG, members of UK Parliament, NGOs, the diaspora, and the general public
  • Through attendance at meetings, conferences, seminars, functions and official events identify resources in the UK and Europe that could improve the wellbeing of nationals and assist GOM’s achieving its development goals.
  • Establish and maintain positive connections with individuals, leaders of organisations whose interests align with the stated policies of Government of Montserrat and Montserrat nationals.
  • Establish a database of nationals skills and experience critical to the developmental aspirations Montserrat
  • Provide assistance as required for Montserrat students and Montserrat medical patients during their stay in the UK.
  • Host regular meetings for community leaders in the UK to enable networking and exchange of views and mutual support amongst members of the Diaspora.
  • Advocate on behalf of Montserratians living in the UK and provide information and advice.
  • Facilitate from members of the Diaspora applications for birth, marriage, and death certificates from the Registrar on island.
  • Provide a secretariat for visiting GOM ministers and officials and facilitate the promotion of investment, trade and tourism.
